What are various architecture component of vCenter?


vSphere Client: Used to connect virtual center

vSphere Web Access: Is is used to manage VM on ESX(Currently not esxi)

vCenter database: is the most critical component. it stores inventory, roles and their permissions,performance data, resources pool and other critical information.

Active Directory domain: It is not a core requirement but it’s absence is huge security implication as vCenter security is built on windows security.When vCenter server is a part of domain, users & groups become part of vCenter and their management is responsibility of AD. If vCenter is not a member of domain, then local users and groups are used to access vCenter.

Managed Hosts: vCenter manages ESX/ESXi as well as virtual machines.

Core Services:

  1. Task scheduling
  2. Alarm & events management
  3. Provisioning VM
  4. Management of resources and VM
  5. Host and VM configuration
  6. performance data logging

Distributed services, which gets installed with vCenter installation

  1. vMotion
  2. VMware HA
  3. DRS

Plug-in: This needs to be installed separately. No separate license is needed for these plug-in. E.g. VUM and VMware vCenter Convertor. Typically modules includes server and client component. By default below plug-ins are installed

  • vCenter Storage monitoring –>adds Storage view tabs(Which has reports and maps)
  • vCenter Service Status –> vCenter various service health status
  • vCenter Hardware Status –> adds hardware tab to host’s display

Database interface (ODBC connection) and AD interface(ADAM for linked mode)

vSphere API provides interface for 3rd party software to write application to manage vSphere

ESX/ESXi Host management: vpxa and hostd communicate with each other. All instructions are passed from vpxa to hostd to perform any activity on host. vpxa is virtual center agent installed on the esx host when it is added to vCenter. Hostd also resides on esx/esxi host.
