Maximum number of virtual machines for 8-Node cluster with fail over capacity


If we refer maximum configuration sheet, you will come across there is limit of 160 VM if you have HA cluster configured for 8 Nodes.

So total number of virtual machines will be 160 x 8 =1280 for 8 nodes

Now this means each node will host 160 VM’s but if one node fails, other nodes are not capable of holding this 160 nodes, as they are already on the maximum limit. So next question what should be the number of VM’s we should plan to get N+1 capacity and so on. I’m fully aware there will very limited environment which can go to this limit but sake of playing with maths, I thought I state it

CALCULATION:

N+1

140 * 8 =1120

If one nodes fails 1120/7 =160 (Maximum limit)

Only 140 VM’s per host could be planned

N+2

120 * 8=960

If two nodes (8-2) fails 960/6=160 (Maximum limit)

Only 120 VM’s per host could be planned

N+3

100*8=800

If 3 nodes(8-3) fail 800/5=160 (Maximum limit)

Only 100 VM’s per host could be planned

N+4(This is maximum fail over allowed)

80*8=640

If 4 nodes(8-4) fail 640/4=160 (Maximum limit)

Only 80 VM’s per host could be planned
